just anything well written is fine with me

But if bands try to make a political or social point or even talk about a historical event in a cheap half ass written manner i tend to just stick to the music (of course this can change if its not a very serious band)

Queensryche,Toxik,Helstar,Intruder,Infernal Majesty,Running Wild,Manilla Road,Sodom,Slauter Xtroyes,Terrorizer are the first bands that come into my mind that i tend to go through the lyrics and find them (mostly) good and entertaining

special mention of course goes to Dio as solo,on Sabbath and even on Rainbow (yea blame the fan boy)

if there were a glam maffia , you would have been in some serious trouble right now.
There is but they all post over at Heavy Harmonies with guys like Newbuchadnezzar.

This poll is severely lacking the "I Don't give a shit about lyrics" option.

I know it is and I did want to include it too, but for a reason unknown I could add only 7 options. :?

If you want interesting lyrics check none other than Forsaken from Malta. Well written pro-christianity lyrics without sounding like a preacher. More of apocalyptic approach towards a view were mankind rises against evil (satan) and defeats it through the help of god. I'm no practicising christian myself (in fact I see myself as an Agnostic Theist) but I still find them really thought evoking.

From the track Dies Irae (Day of Wrath):

"The misguided worship your sins
Parading idols and embracing dogmas of treason
Yet He has come for His forsaken kin
[Behold] the Rising Phoenix - the man of eternal sorrow

He rises above dying embers of battle ravaged lands
Man reborn from the womb of blood thirsty hands
The sword of justice falls on those who murder, maim and rape
Blood red skies mark the plains where the innocent die without dignity"

From the track Metatron and the Mibor Mythos:

Armored by the crowning faith
Into the womb of the damned, the iniquitous land
Sworn to shield the blood of the Saviour
A gladius of virtue clasped with pride

Lucifer dethroned, Satan writhes and cries
Ending the scourge of the serpent tempter

Rise Metatron Rise!
Receiver of souls
Your tears weighed by the transgressions of man

Awake blessed angel
Child of the fire mist
Forever in hell the legions of legematon shall burn

Reaching for the Sun
The seasons of renewal set sail
Over impervious, cruel winter seas
Bestowing hope to the sinners' pleas

Lyrics written by Albert Bell, the bassist of Forsaken, who has a PhD in Sociology and is Head of the Youth Studies Department in the University of Malta.

"Pro-Christian" and "thought-provoking" cannot co-exist.

As far as I'm concerned everything can be thought-provoking. You just have to be able to put prejudice aside. Not easy......but some can do it.

the repetition of the words "summer night" also tends to be grotesque

Violent or scathing lyrics that tell some kind of conflict story on religion or war really work well for me. Hell, Holy Terror, and Sabbat were the masters of this, with lyrics that not only entertain with great imagery, but argue a point that cannot come off as preachy because it's given from an imaginative or (quasi-)historical perspective. Slough Feg has some really excellent ones too, although they go a little too far into fantasy sometimes, and Iron Maiden also somewhat fits at times, albeit not generally as visceral.

I like story lyrics. Topics are less important.

Any topic can provide good, or bad lyrics. Some sort of fantasy lyrics of a certain style are great in moderation... And anything about sex or love is usually ridiculously shit :)

I quite like "kill the posers" lyrics. Often good for a laugh those, or at the very least a small chuckle.
