agreed! I really love their first two, & then only 'Nightfall In Middle Earth' ...got no time for the rest, plenty of other things to listen to in-between. Tried to get into 'Imaginations...' but didnt get it :(

Stormwarrior is an awesome current band. They sound like Helloween's Walls of Jericho. Not original at all, but incredible songwriting. All their lyrics are about Vikings, heavy metal, destroying the enemies of Vikings and heavy metal, and refusing to kneel before anyone. Very cool!

Paragon are my favourite out of all the Remedy Records band's. Stormwitch are probably my second favourite out of all those bands but don't have the same originality Paragon have.

CUSTARD is such a stupid name for a band... there was an Australian gay alt band called CUSTARD, fuck I hated them so much... stoopid! :D

These bands & this style of music is just a different league for me??? :?

Custard and Chinchilla are very retarded band names indeed then galloglass that band reminds me of a local winery called gallo winery and I've know people who have worked in the glass portion of this winery so its sort of weird every time I see this bands name.

I was going to soon pull this thread again need some more recommendations to the more Speed Orientated early stuff like Scanner and Mania.

Actually hload I think Reactor are pretty weak their first album anyway do they get better? I was especially curious about the album(s) with Coe on vocals. What a kick arse vocalist.

I didn't like the first 2 Chroming Rose albums; some reviewers trumpeted them as the successors to Helloween, but I thought CR was much weaker sounding.

Heavens Gate were awesome early on but lost the plot quickly. Their early albums are great power metal, but by 'Hell for Sale!' they were getting too silly for their own good.

Hmm, some others from around that time (though not necessarily German):

Blind Guardian were godly of course, and Gamma Ray were awful until Ralph was replaced on vocals.

Capricorn were decent; they were a bit heavier than the other bands mentioned so far; coarser vocals and heavier riffs, really balls-out powerful stuff at times.

Mind Odyssey were also pretty good, they fell somewhere between the Chroming Rose and Heavens Gate in style. Very catchy, well-written songs.

Custard were ok but came across as BLind Guardian wannabes. The horrible band name didn't help them along any.

Scanner made the incredible 'hypertrace' album but then got the 'silly german fever' and made the goofy 'terminal earth' album (it's not bad, but it really tries to be goofy in the manner of 'Keeper of the Seven Keys 2'). Their later albums didn't impress me.

Some of Sinner's albums from that period are good

Viper was a brazilian band that were fantastic early on. Best known as Andre Matos' firsst band before Angra. 'Theatre of Fate' has a strong 'Keeper of the Seven Keys' vibe. The follow-up (w/o Matos), 'evolution', is a great no-frills rocker (think of Hibria)

Running WIld did their best work aruond that time

Stormwarrior are a great, new band although their 'Walls of Jericho' worship is so blatantly obvious they're almost a cover band (but in a good way)

Attack were a small german band who did some great power metal albums around that time (destinies of war, seven years in the past).

Secrecy were more of a prog band; not bad but not really my thing

It's impossible not to like the Helloween Keepers and not to like the first 3 albums of Chroming Rose(masterpieces).

Heavens Gate for me ceased to exist after Living In Hysteria album.

Secrecy is definitely not progressive. That's the term some intellectuals tried to tag them which is not true. It's pure Power Metal in its finest form.

But someone must give more attention to SEVENTH AVENUE-Southgate it crushes the most 90's German Scene.70 minutes of hymns and intelligence. For me the best album of 1998.

Agreed on helloween, but the 1st 2 CR albums were too weak for me; needed better and heavier songwriting. I remember reading rave reviews of 'louis XIV' and 'garden of eden' in Sentinel Steel.... of course, Denis also raved about Stratovarius, and I never got into them either :)

Half of 'Hell for Sale!' is good, but LH was definitely their last solid studio album (the 'Live for Sale!' album is pretty good)

Sorry, but I gotta disagree. Their first album might fall under the prog/power banner of bands like Heir Apparent, but their second album, 'raging romance', is far from pure power metal. The songs are lightweight, introspective, and have odd structures to them. They're certainly not prog in the manner of YES or DREAM THEATER, but they also don't have much in common wth 'pure' power metal bands like Running Wild and helloween.

Don't know Seventh Avenue

I like both of their albums. But, no, i wouldn't call them neither progressive in the way Dream Theater are nor power in the way Helloween are, i agree That goes for both albums. It's rather prog/power metal perfomed the Teutonic way, if there ever was something like that, so no Queensryche/Fates Warning influences here. The debut is more metallic with a noticeable thrash edge, the second one more "power" but still metal. Actually, Secrecy are a quite unique band.

I've gave the first who chroming rose albums numerous listens and nothing stands out here as for Stratovarius a lot of people worshiping their album Visions brings to mind people worshiping blind guardian's Nightfall in Middle-Earth, I don't quite understand it the albums are good in some ways but fall short and they certainly don't deserve the praise they get ,the only stratovarius album I found myself liking is their first album fright night.

Sinner's 3 best albums of the 90's are as follows Bottom Line,Judgement Day and The nature of evil, they are summed up quite nicely on the second decade compilation.

Running Wild's - Black Hand Inn is usually the more highly praised of their 90's efforts.
