Alright, after the discussion regarding the style, I started to doubt myself and need some help here. Please list similar bands one could compare NITEFALL to, if you can think of any.
When I listen to NITEFALL I think of all the classic & great Cleveland bands from that era & before.
I guess they have Doom elements, but like I said, I never think of the doom sound when I listen to them?? Maybe that's just my ears?
They are the complete opposite sound of Severe Warning, so can't be compared to a thrash sound.
The 'Waiting For Darkness' demo is probably my fave & very epic sounding (production) & even a tad 'avantgarde' in parts?
'Powerful Heavy Metal with Doom elements' (as described on M-A) may actually be the best way I could/would describe them...
Closest band they may sound similar to is Mercyful Fate ...perhaps
Yeah, "Waiting for Darkness" is definitely their finest hour. It is hard for me to compare them to Mercyful Fate, but perhaps to late period Cirith Ungol Paradise Lost circa?
From the Ohio bands I think they are closer to Mistreater, not like sound or anything, just like overall feeling.
I bought this CD recently and was floored. I wrote a review for a website and then decided to share it here. Having read this topic for the first time now I realise some of my remarks are in agreement with things that had been pointed out here.
Here is the review:
Considering this CD compiles the three demos Nitefall released between 1990 and 1992, the result is remarkably consistent and it sounds really good throughout the whole of the listening experience. Production and mastering can never make up for lack of musicianship; in this case, however, there is no such lack in any way, be it technical proficiency or composition skills. The songwriting is careful and often complex, mixing very efficiently metallic heaviness with a very melodic side of the music, conveyed mainly by Kotarski's singing but also by the riffs and leads.
I don't agree so much with the Heavy/Doom tag because I don't hear all that Doom here. It is certainly an influence in the latter work of the band, and even before then there are occasional slow to mid-tempo parts, but I see Nitefall far more as a pure melodic Heavy Metal band, whose sound can be included without much effort in the style of the great eighties' american bands such as Brocas Helm and Cirith Ungol. Maybe having had their name inspired by Candlemass' sophomore masterpiece carries some psychological weight too.
The first four tracks, taken from the first demo, immediately show the band's high quality, that would nevertheless be later improved. All songs are strong, with no great highlights. For my personal taste I'd say the bass' metallic resonation is a little bit exaggerated, but this would be subsequently corrected. The following demo opens with the astounding 'Don't Break the Seal' (perhaps my favourite track in the CD), a fantastic song that totally breathes NWOBHM. 'Desert of Ice' ensues, a slower and monstrously heavy track that is phenomenal. As soon as the vocals kick in I am reminded of Fates Warning's second and third albums. 'Race to the End' follows (I'm sure I've heard something remarkably alike to that second turn of the vocals in some Sacred Steel album), and by comparison it is not as memorable as the magnificent previous two songs, the same happening with the comparatively generic 'The Quest', but all of Nitefall's compositions are above a level of very high standards set by the band's indisputable talent and ability. The final demo has a standout: 'Red Moon Rising', which is fabulous and sounds like a lost Cirith Ungol song, with Kotarski sounding a lot like Tim Baker.
Stormspell must be congratulated for its relentless effort in recovering these lost gems from the mists of time.
Thanks for the great review man, appreciated very much!
The irony is, this CD is one of the weakest sellers on the Stormspell's roster. Even clunkers like Robyn Danger outsold it by a good margin... Fascinating, isnt it.
You'd think it'd sell quite well riding on the Candlemass link. I liked the release but it didn't impress me that much. Haven't listened to it in a while. I'll need to put it on tonight to see what I think of it after some time in the cooler.
