Yeah, power metal, as an historical term, was originally used for bands that were heavier then Maiden and Priest but NOT thrash or speed. That's the definition I still use.

..."METAL CHURCH, SAVAGE GRACE, HEATHEN'S RAGE, OMEN, JAG PANZER etc?"

Great examples.

I just heard that definition "Power Metal" around 1987 with Helloween...
Never before i heard from other fan that word. But back in those days we didn't have those strange sub-genres that now everyone loves to label bands.
We usually putted bands in 3 "Rooms" only...Hard Rock, Heavy Metal and anything faster and heavier would go to Speed/Thrash/Death.
Simple !

It's as simple as that:

But like numerous other things, people forget about history or simply doesn't know it at all.... just like this big four thing garbage where there's only 1 (now bad) Thrash band on it and 3 semi speedy Heavy Metal bands....

I see the point of using the term "power" to denote music which sounds powerful, but it's not really how musical genres are used, or else all fast metal would be "speed metal". Black metal is even weirder because it doesn't sound black, and metal itself can be questioned because it really doesn't sound metal except for the high hats and cymbals.

So let's change heavy metal to heavy engines. Because it makes more sense. 8)

"Only one thing really sets me free, heavy engines loud as it can be."
It even makes more sense in lyrics.
