Yeah it's all good, & don't get me wrong I totally worship that era of Bathory, but nothing beats the first time I ever heard Massacre!!!!!!!!
'Under The Sign..' totally fucking ripped me to shreds & for me is what Bathory is all about..
..but I do REALLY like the Hammerheart album & especially the track 'Father To Son'

Sorry to flip the coin here, but I've never been a fan of "Hammerheart" or Bathory in general...
This stuff is way too boring, repetitive and monotonous for me.

There's no denying Bathory was monotonous, especially on Hammerheart and Twilight of the Gods. Still, I kinda like that it is so monotonous. Often when I listen to those albums I find myself thinking "thank god they let this riff play over and over so I can really enjoy it and didn't just play it once and then broke into something else and then something else again".
With some progressive metal bands I get the feeling that the qualities of some riffs and melodies are sacrificed for the sake of variation and complexness. Like the killer mid tempo riff in the middle of Fates Warning's "Prelude to Ruin". It ends one micro second after it begins and then the song goes into yet something else again. It would have been so killer had they just played that riff a few times over.
So, thank you Quorthon for being monotonous.

in fact, i think he made those albums like that on purpose, monotonous and "slow" as hell

There were still Black Metal traces left on Hammerheart, and that kind of music was meant to be monotonous. At least in the 80's.

Yeah, like some sub-par thrash as well...

ah the memories. a long time since I've listened to this. watching video.
"...smelling not of beer, but flowers! and with no hair in face..." timeless
that album is not even meant to be discussed and dissected. it's just good as it is, full of naiveté and imperfections. just like me when I first heard it, add a bit of acne too and general awkwardness. I think it'll forever be connected to my puberty and a gigantic fascination for vikings. awesome.

All the Bathory albums are full of this, that is why (most of them) are so special in their own unique way.

I could never pick a fave between s/t, Under The Sign and Hammerheart. It's a mood-thing, pure and simple.
I do think there's a HUGE gap in quality between Hammerheart and Twilight.. though. Damn that album disappointed me when it came out!

On some days I think Twilight of the Gods is even better than Hammerheart. It's very much a mood thing for me, deciding which is better. Twilight... has an entirely different approach. While Hammerheart is still very much the in your face kind of pounding metal, Twilight is reflective, atmospheric, and just pure collossal with those accoustic guitars and bittersweet melodies. I think there's some sort of emotional quality, an aura if you like, inside the album that you have to connect with to appreciate it. It connects with me, and greatly so. "Under the Runes" is the only Bathory song that has ever brought me to tears.

Whether it was done purposely or not, that doesn't change my opinion or the fact that I have to force myself to stay awaken while listening to "Hammerheart"...
While I'm slagging that period of Bathory, I might as well add that the highly over used "epic" moaning done in the back round throughout that entire album also adds to the drawn-out feeling of the album and even gets pretty annoying for me after a while.

The lyrics to this song are really stupid, but hell, so are a big part of all metal lyrics
