Way to take that quote out of context though. He's talking about the rights to a record cover.
Question: Are you aware Morbid Angel used the same artwotk as Hexenhaus with their \'BATS\' album? From:
Answer: yes its pure co-incidence that Swedish thrash band Hexenhaus used the Artwork on their album "Tribute to Insanity" in 1988, and then a good 3 years afterwards, in 1991 Morbid Angel chose the same painting for the cover of Blessed are The Sick. At the time we were aware that it had been used beforehand,and showed the band the album- but it didnt deter Morbid from requesting it.In actual fact when we contacted the museum which held the rights for use of the painting - 1895's Tresor de Satan By Jean Delville- they told us that no other band had requested the image.So we know Hexenhaus did not officially seek to use the image from the rights owner, just copied it from a book we expect. For this reason Morbid Angel had the moral superiority, and indeed legal right to use it, as granted by the museum.I guess its fitting that Hexenhaus LP is no longer in print but Morbid's version has been in constant printing for 17 years now.Funny how two different acts came across the same art eh?

Answer: Earache likes to work with creative, innovative musicians, ideally big selling ones aswell..but strangely, the 2 do not always mix.Over the years we have worked with many many of the best, most credible extreme metal musicians- and i've often said on this blog that Chuck Schuldiner of Death is pretty much the one person we badly regret missing out on working with, simply because the chances never came up, and after his passing, the legendary status of Chuck is unsurpassable in extreme metal.
Where he basically implies he'd have liked to work with Chuck Schuldiner before his death so he could enjoy the revenue from after he died.

I don't know if that quote is out of context, but I think that what he said is bullshit.
Saying that Morbid Angel has the "moral superiority" just because they payed for something, even though someone else has done it first is wrong for me. In any case they have the "legal superority". In a certain way, he's saying that "moral superiority" is something you can buy. And for the record, I love Morbid Angel and haven't heard Hexenhaus. My opinion is just based on this guy's words.

A moral superiority exists if you respect the avenue through which you might license a piece of art to use for a cover instead of just taking it from a book and slapping it on your record like apparently Hexenhaus did.

Oops! I had no intentions with my post other than telling you I was amused by the quote. Yes, it was taken out of context, for a laugh. I guess the painter is long since dead and I have nothing against either Hexenhaus, Morbid Angel or Earache or their doings. I guess I am not a very political person. Since there are more good stuff released than I can afford or have the time to embrace I have no trouble people releasing bad stuff even if they drag the Heavy Metal-tag in the dirt thereby... I do not identify with Heavy Metal in any way - I just happen to like it! Musically neither of these bands are my cup of tea - even if I have a couple of Hexenhaus LP's (which I seldom spin) and some titles from Earache (Cathedral and Bolt Thrower). But please
do go on if you like!

Is like GJ said, the painter was already dead for long, so what's the big deal with using it? And again, that would be legal terms, that I'm not sure if they're "moral". Let's suppose that Morbid Angel stole the idea of using that pic, just 'cause they payed makes them have the "moral superiorty"? My objection is that this guy bases his vision of what's "morally superior" in the fact of paying or not, and that shows his way of thinking, in my opinion. But that's just a detail, I think that in general lines we all think the same about him.

That's true that we probably do. I am not fond of him.
The painter might be dead but he might have family interested in keeping his affairs straight. It's not just about money. For example, can anyone check the hexenhaus record and see if they printed who the artist of the cover in the liner notes? If they did, hey, fair enough.

I have a lot of old Earache records back from the day, but ever since they started shitting on Metal and trying to dictate the new fad in "heavy music" each year or so, they were dead and gone to me. And this happened a long time ago. They have since sunk deeper and deeper as far as I am concerned. Recent episodes such as the Gama Bomb blunder that I believe totally backfired are not even ridiculous anymore, they're just sad. So they are definitely not seeing any money from me even if that release features Portrait, Ram, Powervice, Enforcer, etc.
And the 7th Son manifesto is childish and idiotic in my opinion.
If you don't know what I mean with the Gama Bomb episode (apparently it was not discussed here) here's a
