It's all hit and miss when your out diggin.
You never know what might have just walked in.
I always find the best bet is to hit as many places as you can, and dont just look for stores that might sell metal.
There are places in the city that just move records. ALL kinds anything. Princeton Record Exchange puts out 500-1000 new records ever other day. You just have to be lucky.

Slipped Disc is awesome! There are a few small shops that have good stuff. Nothing incredibly rare, but theres some good lesser-known (non-mainstream) stuff for good prices. The best ive found around Long Island (although ive heard of much better deals that people beat me toglockose wrote:OK Rob is correct you might do better hitting the road BUT I did great in NY early Nov.
I only know of 2 TRUE metal stores left there ZigZag Records & Slipped Disc
http://www.slippeddiscrecords.com/
http://www.zigzagrecords.com/
Zig Zag is on Ebay As Leghorn23 and they have another store in Brooklyn that is not listed on there site but if you call they can help you with it.
Slipped Disc doesn't have a lot of vinyl and is now starting to close done BUT I do great there every time I go(Once a year) Chinatown LP $10, Savatage "Par" $5, ........
If you really have some tiome and want to dig let me know and I can send you a PM with more info

However, if you've been collecting for a long time and have then there probably isnt much that would interest you at all. I spend most of my money on stuff that I wont get another chance to get (99% online), so the majority of what I own is rarer stuff. Id like to buy vinyl copies of "Master of Reality" and stuff like that but with shipping costs it just isnt worth it online (at least for me because my income isnt great at all). At least locally I can get stuff like that for low prices and use the majority of my money for rarer stuff online.
Ive never been to Zig Zag, but Im going to try to go this weekend. It sounds pretty interesting. Thanks!

I'll second what John says about this place. They do get a lot of street traffic and a lot of records to look through. I went to at least 2 of their shops and I did buy records there but no metal, I guess I could have bought that RAVEN lp I left behind
They do have a good solid selection of psych reissues, so if that is your thing I guarantee there will be something interesting.
