I know it's been mentioned a couple of times already, but the best band name is:
JUDAS PRIEST
Honourable mentions to MERCYFUL FATE, MANILLA ROAD, DESOLATION ANGELS, CELTIC FROST...
I love one-word band names but strongly appreciate the skill involved in coming up with a great, meaningful band name of 2 words or more..

The best and most archetypal metal names have a good subversion in them (something good turned into something bad) so Judas Priest and Black Sabbath are some of the best of this type.
Single-word names remind me of single-mindedness in approach. 'Slayer' says 'we shall thrash and nothing less' to me. This is both good and bad.
two-word names that do not subvert the meaning but amplify it are very metal 'Liege Lord', 'Dark Tyrant', 'Lordian Guard' but they also mean to say 'we are interested in ONE thing only, we are not about variety'.
Though I guess in the largely secular heavy metal context, 'Lordian Guard' is a very subversive name. 'Satanic Guard' would not be.
