Yeah, they are what is broadly called Russian Rock, which include everything from Machina Vremeny, through Brigada C, Chaif, to Zvuki Mu. Krematoriy have several hard-rock songs, but the majority are just plain rock. If you like bands like Brigada C, Nautilus Pompilius, or Neprikasaemie you may like it, else save your cash and steer clear

I'm interested in lyrics of old soviet bands. Were they just "normal" hard rock/heavy metal stuff? You know, girls, motorcycles, dragons, history etc? Anything about politics, against communism or against western societys?

And what about nowdays? Atleast our western media has given us quite dark picture of freedom of speech in Russia.

Interesting question which deserves a lenghty answer. I'll try a little...

ARIA's lyrics has thorughout their carreer been written by a woman called Margarita Pushkina and a man called Aleksander Elin (the latter referred to as a "jew" by a Korrozia Metalla member in Destrozer's fanzine "Bloody Vengeance"). On their first LP ARIA has a song called "America is behind" (a pro-Russian "anthem"), on the 2nd "Will and reason", 3rd "Ballad of the ancient russian warrior", 4th "Farewell, Norfolk" etc. Their lyrics mostly deal with historic subjects and as it's been said, "the fight between good vs. evil". Talking about motorcycles, look at the cover of "Geroi Asphalta" (orginally the LP was to be called "Serving the evil force").

In MAGNIT and CREDO there are certain nationalistic themes to be found and an interesting thing is the cover of MAGNIT "Dies Irae" showing a picture of Stalin counting skulls.

SPRUT has a song called "Kapital"... satirical or not?

KORROZIA METALLA is a nazi chapter on their own, but they started out with a less political image (though there is a hidden swastika on the 1st LP "Orden Satany" cover). The band didn't release albums until after the fall of the USSR.

I believe there's a lot more to be said on the topic. As for modern Russian bands I think they don't suffer too many problems since most HM isn't much about politics. The NSBM scene seems to flourish in ex-USSR countries at least. I don't know anythign about the punk scene in Russia, would be interesting to get an insight.

The DIV MCD "Devil's Sabbat" aka "666" is official. At least the ones I've seen. I bought a bunch of them in Russia this atumn and sold them to Peter at Repulsive Records. They sold out pretty fast though...

Magnit's lyrics were borrowed from classic Russian poets. For example, the "Rabotaj" lyrics are from a poem by Alexandr Blok. They also had some Rilke stuff.

This is a fascinating discussion! Please could we get more information about lyrical themes in Russian Metal? I actually only own the first Master LP which is great, even the atmospheric song on the end of side one. Very gruff but effective production.

do you mean me ? Yes, I got that DIV LP, prefer the Devils Sabbath CD a lot. Some guy here in Germany also sold this Re-Release CD in his mailorder (Metalglory.de) for 8 Euros together with the Kruger - Roschdenijm mrakom Re-Release CD for 8 Euros.


Desperately looking for the Front LP and the Oblachnyj Kraj LP though...

I don't think it's that rare. I paid about the same price as you did and it's an overprice I think (especially in Russia where I got it from).

this price would be ok for me, it is just that the LP doesn't appear so often. At least not on my radar
