Very very true.

Your position is easy to defend because fundamentally it's true, yet no one truly goes around thinking everything is but opinions. There are standards we measure things by and there are bands people will think it very odd or even stupid if people don't like, the more obscure the material the harder these standards will be to define. I do not want to surrender to a universal indifference, where "nothing really matters" so I rather have strong opinions on issues and often present them as almost set in stone instead of trying to be a mediating hippie haha
People saying Smith can't write good solos are stupid to me, lacking understanding of musical cohesion; to me it's just like someone claiming Bach didn't write emotional pieces; sure it'll be their opinion but it is an ignorant one... To paraphrase Herzog and doing so with a hint of the humorous, there exists an ecstatic truth in art
Trop Ferros, anyone can like them, but in music we could say certain elements need to be in right proportion to each other to create technical harmony, and the vocalist of that band is not able to sing properly.

As an artist i concur to that Daniel

As a previous owner of the Killen LP I have to say it sucked.

I have to admit that i also don't like KILLEN very much. One of those "cult" albums with a great cover and song titles, but the music is amateurish, not much in good way, rather like a joke where you don't get The point while everybody else laughs except you.

Nice post there, daniel. I'm still a bit skeptical though. I mean, what if I admit for example that Bach did write emotional pieces of music? If I still don't like them and do not listen to them what difference would it make to me? Or even to you or anyone else who has the same mindset as you? What can that change in the way you view art or even the whole world? It's one thing to acknowledge that Bach wrote highly emotional pieces and quite another to say that the emotional pieces of Bach resonate with me and I can relate to them. So, I'm not very sure about the truth of all these things in art or at least to what extend that truth should be the same for each and everyone. Truth is when we say that 1+1=2 or that the earth goes around the sun, but when I say that Maiden are killer metal, that's MY truth and I don't expect everyone else to share the same view with me.

This point fits EVER to any discussion on metal/music/art.

Whether you like or dislike something is subjective. Most of the times, when you like something you believe it is good. There are circumstances though where you know something is good in lots of aspects, even if you don't like it!Once someone told me he didn't like the first Adramelch album, that's fine, but this is a masterpiece in music that no one can doubt any second of its quality, either you dig it or not.

Here's the problem. You are the only one that believes this. To literally prove a standard basis to which makes something "good" you have to have a scientific method of proving such a theory and you cannot do so in regards to what sounds good to you.

Softcore porn, probably not everyone's bag around these parts (but Envenom was a bitch to find)...
And no, I don't do cover variations so I think I'm done here (now to get started on those 7"s

).

It is refreshing to see there are other people around who think KILLEN is crap. I was seriously starting to think I'm the only one who cannot get the joke behind that "band". Thank you guys!

Ion gets it
daniel- it's fine to have strong opinions on things. You can say "I worship 'Maiden, Adrian Smith is LORD!!!!!" and that's cool; you show your enthusiasm and express your opinion in a positive way. You can even say, "I think Maiden SUCKS"; you're just stating your opinion w/o judging others' opinions. But when someone starts in with "I worship 'Maiden and anyone who doesn't is a fucking moron", that's different. That's not just expressing one's enthusiasm for a band, that's trying to assert that your opinion is Superior, thus making you superior to anyone who disagrees. People who insist on attacking others' opinions are elitist, insecure, desperate for attention, or just jackasses who like starting arguments for no reason.
Express your opinions as strongly as you want, but don't cross the line and try to impose them on others as the 'correct' opinion to have- that's no better than overzealous Christians insisting you have to adopt their religious views or you're gonna burn in hell.
If you can't accept the simple truth that people's reactions to music is subjective and doesn't rely on how technically proficient the music is, well, this conversation is pointless.
