Some of jackthereaper's auctions are getting pretty high, others are staying reasonable.

What's with the Thor single? I don't know that one. Sleeve was pretty worn

Oh, and I deleted the link already, but a copy of 'Crystal Logic' climbed to $162 yesterday (2 bidders pushed it above $55). There's a blue vinyl copy currently listed. Are the blue vinyl ones legit? For some reason I've always thought they were boots....?
Blue is European pressing on Black Dragon records. Legit

You know argentinan Thor LP? And the brazilian Thor EP is equal in rarity, but even way more rare. I only know of 4 copies that I've seen in someones hands but unfortunately not in mine. :o

Don't understand all the hysteria about Emerald. I mean for 50 $ it's an ok purchase, but not more. I've just bought an insanely rare testpressing that I've never seen before and that band plays great Power/Thrash and it cost me only 2,45 E incl postage!!!!!! I think such an Emerald is just a status object, you NEED to have one to get accepted in collectors circles but that doesn't means the record is over the top. It just proves you've got the money to buy it, nothing more. For these 345 $ you can get 50 better records that are worth their 10-30 $...

I think EMERALD is a killer album, i'd love to have it myself. A gem for every metal collection if you ask me.
Btw, which test press did you buy?

Says sealed... Yet there is some storage wear on the top edge... How is that possible?

I've had that happen with a record that was damaged during shipping. Were they sealed back then btw?

Several things selling quite high lately. A few examples:

This usually stays near/below $100

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... K:MEWAX:IT

This would be a good buy... IF it had its pic sleeve. Without, it's a $50-60-ish dollar record

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... K:MEWAX:IT

Copies of this one turned up a few years ago and sold as recently as March for $79

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... K:MEWAX:IT

Re: Emerald, the first copy that went for over $400 was ridiculous given the cover condition (noticeable ring wear and worn seams top and bottom). The second copy looked much cleaner (though details were not given) and eventually sold for $345, which is high but not unheard of for this record. More troubling however was the fact that 2 bids were retracted that had the album pushed as high as $460 earlier in the week. Both retractions claimed 'wrong amount entered' but neither bidder re-enetered a corrected amount. Hmmm....

This Hammerwitch is from the same seller and is already $150 over the 'normal' price; I'll be interested to see if a bid(s) are retracted last-second on it too:

Back to Emerald: we've discussed the price-rarity-'greatness' factors before. How 'good' a record is is completely subjective. I think it's a great record and I'd be willing to pay a decent amount for a copy. Sure, you can get 'better' records cheaper, but how many copies of 'Death Penalty' do you need? :)

Sure, there are some people out there who buy albums like Emerald simply to try and 'prove' how hardcore they are and make their collection more kvlt than someone else's, but that's not true of everybody. As I said earlier, I really love the record and would be willing to pay a pretty good amount for a copy, but i want it b/c I like it a lot. I couldn't care less how my collection stacks up against other collectors, and I have no interest at all in spending money just to prove my 'metal-ness'. I don't post pics or lists of what I buy, and I only discuss my purchases with maybe 3-4 other collectors. My point is that some of us are willing to spend a little more on records but we're not ALL doing it just for 'bragging rights'. I buy the records I like, I pay what I consider to be a fair price for them, and I never try to one-up anyone else's collection, and so far I've been pretty happy collecting this way.

Neh, what I meant is simply a normal Metalhead (I'm talking about a Metal "fan", not collector - collectors aren't automatically Metal fanatics because more than half of them buy sealed records and never unseal 'em just to say "I have this or that record". I don't consider myself a collector therefore - I'm Metal fan! And collectors (around 40 with a collection below 5000 records aren't collectors imo - what have they done all the years?) is trying to get what he can for cheap money just to hear as much obscure Metal as possible. But there are certain people who just collect for lists, I mean they are crossing out record for record from a list mentioning the most extreme and most expensive records no matter how shitty they do sound like. Instead of spending 300 $ for an average Emerald I'd rather buy 50 5-10 $ records (and ebay is full with this stuff) and am able to listen to 50 obscure bands....know what I mean?

Absolutely! I never understood why someone will unload $1000+ for Leather Nunn LP when for a fraction of that price they can pick the ENTIRE Judas Priest discography

Thank lord. I'm way below that figure, that means i'm not one of the old, greedy collectors (yet!). That's awfully kind of you LethylSteel.

And since you can categorize other people so well, would you please tell me something, why should someone collect metal records if he is NOT a heavy metal fan. Always keen to know that, thanks in advance for the enlightenment! Now off the buy "Jugulator" and "Angel Of Retribution"....

What if they already have the entire Judas Priest discography? :) Some of us old timers have heard most of the normal, easy-to-find stuff. I've owned 3-4 copies of some of the classic metal albums already, so there's no reason for me to buy these again.

And you have to remember that 'good' is completely subjective; I wouldn't give $1 for every Kreator record ever made b/c I personally just don't like 'em.

I see the distinction you're trying to make between 'fans' and 'collectors' but again I must point out that some people, like myself, are both. Yes, I have a want list and take great pleasure in crossing certain items off that list; but the list only includes records that I genuinely enjoy listening to, regardless of their value or rarity. There are some records on my list I would gladly pay several hundred dollars for, but there are a lot of 'big ticket' items that I have no interest in owning at all; I wouldn't buy a copy of 'From the Fjords' or 'Take the Night' unless it were really cheap and I knew I could quickly sell/trade it- I would not add either of those big-dollar records to my collection b/c I do not like them that much (Leather Nunn is alright, I could never get into Legend at all).

I don't think you can put minimum size requirements on a 'true' fan's collection either. My collection is very small even though I've collected for over 20 years. The reason is simple; for most of my life I've had very little money to spend on records. I've also had very limited storage space and had to move a lot (I think I went through 20 address changes in about 15 years), which meant any records I bought that I didn't like were eventually sold or traded to put money back in my pocket and spare me having to move around and store a lot of music that I didn't even want to listen to. Again, I only collect what i like, which currently amounts to about 800 cds, maybe 400-500 LPs, and maybe 200 singles. My want list is < 150 items

Please just be careful how you label collectors; I assure you that not all of us are insanely rich guys just buying metal records on a lark, keeping them sealed next to our Rolls Royce and Fabregeie Egg collections without ever having a clue as to what the bands even sound like.

I didn't label anyone. Just agreed with the previous poster it is funny to see a collection solely based on eGay value than on actual music, that's all.

I'm not a rich daddy's son either. I buy records since 1990 too and I'm not 40 years old yet nor ever had much money to spend each month (about 150 E per month) but so far I got around 4000 12 inches and almost 800 7 inches and this with my extremely low budget and a bank account that's since 5 years constantly in the minus :P and with the 5-10 $ I didn't mean Kreator LP's, I was talking about obscure private records from all over the world. This includes vinyls from Thailand, Malaysia and of course the usual US Metal stuff. Imo in the ebay age you don't need any lists anymore. Just go to ebay and enter "Metal" in the search field. You'll find so many records that you could spend your monthly salary within an hour easily.

You didn't read properly. There are Metal fans and collectors. A Metal fan spends money for a record to listen to it, a collector spends money for a record to say "I have it". Or how would you explain that people spend 300 $ for a record and never unseal it??? So the music can't be the reason to buy the record then...
I know that many collectors feel insulted by that statement and that's my goal. Maybe it's time to think about their true reasons for buying records....
The music matters not the price.
