In the era when W.A.S.P. initially broke through, the term "Heavy Metal" was applied to bands as disparate as AC/DC and Venom.
Quote by bigfootkit....

************************************************
The problem with to many heavy metal bands back in those days 1981-1987...It was just bands could not decide if they wanted to be watered-down Judas Priest or Judas Priest amped-up on speed metal. To many bands had the wrong idea what heavy metal was....To many bands back in the early days of independant heavy metal, were just fucking crazy by thinking metal should compete with REO speedwagon, Billy Squire, Journey...or whatever AOR band was all the rage with the average record buying public. You can ask anyone buying tons of metal back then....How many bands were hailed as metal masters, but if given the chance they would of never tried trying to split the difference between AC/ DC or Van Halen, and Judas Priest. No wonder why everyone turned there backs on MID-PACED heavy metal for Speed Metal, Power Metal and Thrash Metal.

Compared to LA's Steeler and Arizona's Surgical Steel...Venom and Raven sound a billion times heavier than those artist. All i am saying is if you pick up a book on heavy metal in the future, one should not be shocked by the inclusion or omission of the band WASP...I would omit WASP, except for saying Metallica and Armored Saint blew them off stage back in 1984.

To me WASP got ignored as something along the lines of say Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, or a West Coast answer to Twisted Sisters " We not Going to take it".

I listen to rock and roll, because it pre-dates HEAVY METAL in a big way, but I would never confuse the 2 genres.
Either Heavy metal is its own genre, or it is a sub-set of rock and roll, in that case, why not JUST LOVE EVERY POSER and buy every RECORD, becasue it has the rock and roll and heavy metal classification attacted to it.
I have the rock vs. metal segregation and hate I false metal. It just helps me see the forest (the hype shit/ garbage/crap/nonsense) from the trees (the classics/ essentials that should be purchased at all cost, even missing a meal or 3)...!!!

I read this website to find out about bands such as Coven, Deep Switch, HELL and stuff like that. If I wanted to dig deep into the history of LA glam metal, I would join some shit like blabbermouth.

I forgot if I've already posted in this topic, apologies in advance if I did.

Anyhow, I was in 8th grade when S/T was released in 1984 and it instantly rocked my world. It was one of the pilot cassettes in my meager collection back then and I literally worn it out.

I cant really care less if WASP are considered hard rock, posers, not contributed enough, alcoholics, or if Blacky has manboobs and is a douche in person. For me WASP are the foundation of my personal metal adventure, along with Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Twisted Sister, Accept, Dokken, Mercyful Fate, Def Leppard, Stormwitch, and everything else I was listening to back then. So yeah, 100% metal, at least up to Crimson Idol.

Who gets to decide what "Metal" constitutes?
For some people it's Black Sabbath, for others it's Napalm Death.
In the era when W.A.S.P. initially broke through, the term "Heavy Metal" was applied to bands as disparate as AC/DC and Venom.
If a band played Hard they were Metal, it was that simple.
All these sub-genre categorisations didn't come until later in the decade, initially as a lazy short-hand for journalists to give readers a rough idea of a band's sound.
I don't think it's served Metal as a whole, or individual bands very well, as the term "Metal" can now mean almost anything guitar based, and the sub-genre headings only seem to serve to stifle the creativity of a lot of bands who only view themselves as part of a narrow sub-genre.
And those sub-genre names aren't really helpful to those bands who are not so easily pigeon-holed stylistically either.
So if we are, (as The Corroseum motto so proudly states), waging "uncompromising war on metallic modernism" here, let's stop using these narrow modern categorisations all together and get back to using the term "Metal" in a more inclusive way.
As the broad term which we used when the classic sounds which bring us together here were created.
Rant over.
;)
Thanks BFK. I also believe humour got lost in the nihilistic blackness of certain nineties (heavy) metal movements. If someone decides to turn their back on the kind of Heavy Metal music made famous by Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath (and Wasp) and moves on in a speedier/thrashier direction just because somebody else considers Journey and Boston (or Wasp  ) being (somewhat) Heavy Metal, then this person definitely must be very weak in heart and mind and worthy of my heartfelt condolences.

Now all go listen to Manilla Road's Defender!

I heartily agree GJ, and it's a real pity that a lot of humour in HM has been lost down through the years.
All the great bands of the past were able to play their Metal with a great big smile on their faces, and put those self-same smiles on the faces of their audiences.

Would you people please hurry up and decide if WASP are METAL or Not so I can decide whether I like them or not???!!! :D

Seriously, if you refuse to like something just b/c it falls in the wrong category, well, that's pretty sad.

If you like it then play it, if you don't, play something else.

Categories are fine if you're just trying to get an idea of what a band might sound like, but you gotta hear it to really know, so why put so much stock in the category?

Personally I never got into early WASP much, but I love 'Headless Children' and several albums after that are also really good (Still Not Black Enough, Crimson Idol, KFD). After that I didn't get into the albums much.

They were always just mainstream enough to agitate Metal Purists, and always raw-heavy enough to agitate Mainstream sheep. 'Appetite for Destruction' was the same way.

WASP is a band that played metal music, BUT all this playback thing + blackie's behavior is definitely far from BEING METAL..........

i still can't believe people pay money to see them "live" ..........
Plus, this fascist , is #1 of all DICKHEADS......
FAK 'EM.....

@bigfootkit and GJ:Happiness, smiling and having a good time is not metal. Metal is all about painting your face white and hanging out alone in the forest while making sure everything is painful. Suffering, that's metal. Wear your studs on the inside.

It's colder outside. We had snow a couple of days ago.

@GJ: I made you suffer? Cool  You should thank me.
