Shit guitar players

Post by dford »

Ok, everyone has the "guitar god polls", but who are the worst guitar players you have ever heard, I'm talking about lead playing here, I'll start out with my favorite worst two
Kirk Hammett : So fucking bad it hurts, after Masters it's all down hill, They did everyone a favor by leaving solo's off St Anger
Danny Spitz : no comment

I can't agree with Kirk, cos there ain't nothing terrible about him up to 'Justice...'.

I don't have much to add at the moment, maybe Kimi of Reverend Bizarre/Lord Vicar in a live setting hehe ;)

I don't agree about Kirk. There are some great solos on Justice (Blackened, To live is to die blues stuff) and after that as well - the solo in Bleeding me for instance. Epic. And, the stuff he did on the first three albums are enough anyway, in my opinion, to not ever call him bad or overrated. He has never been the most technically skilled guitar player, but his sense for melody is/was incredible. He has written more memorable solos than most (but not all) other guitarists I can think of.

My top 1 says Zakk Wylde. He's not only doing new bad stuff, he's destroying old good stuff with all those overtones as well.

I suppose this a thread that concerns more those who are musicians...I personally don't pay much attention to the skills of a guitar player if the riffing isn't very good. To hell with technicality if the riffs are killer.

Yeah, he's absolutely rotten. He's one of the worst, even without taking into account his versions of old Sabbath/Ozzy songs.

With Kirk it has been the wah pedal for me, he just over does it. I really enjoy his playing on the first 3 albums, the load albums certainly had some great guitar but the new album is totally out to lunch. I should of titled this thread "guitar players that have lost their touch" :D

Yeah cos even if you hate Zakk Wylde he's still NOT 'shit' technically(and no I don't like BLS but that doesn't mean I need to state things that aren't true).

tbh i don't care that much about guitar skills. sure the soli of slayer's first are amazing and drive you crazy. but sloppy drunken shit play can be appealing either. you know when something is called rabid or bestial youre in for an indie crappy cellar recording most probably by underage teens and lots of hardcore/punk influence. you can say it sounds unspoiled and honest and that's the whole beauty of it or it's just badly played xy-metal. a matter of taste.

That's funny, because for me his greatest moment came on ..And Justice For All. The Solo section in "One" is... one of the best in thrash metal. And the rest on this album is not far behind.

Overall I strongly disagree with putting him here, although I also dislike what he has become as a guitar player after AJFA.

AJFA is one of my favorite albums, I'm fairly neutral to his solos on that lp, maybe had a few too many scotch when I posted this, I just can't get into his playing on the S/T lp and the new album.

I don't play guitar, so I really wouldn’t know. I don't really have a basis of knowledge or comparison for this topic.

What determines "shit" playing anyways?

I mean, how many demos do well all listen to and love that most people that don't understand our tastes in music would classify as sounding like shit for the production values alone?

I guess I just wanted to discuss guitar players that I once upon a time really enjoyed but for some reason they don't appeal to me anymore, such in the case of Hammett. It has nothing to do with technique or knowledge. Take Slayer solos for example , I love their playing but is it in key or in time , no, it just feels right in the context they are using it. Some players just go off on such a tangent I wonder if they are listening to the same song they are playing over. A perfect example to me is Karl Logan, his solos sound like a video game soundtrack to me, but I love Manowar. "Shit" may of been the wrong word to use, but it's only a matter of opinion anyway.
