Late 80s/early 90s scandinavian metal recommendation

Post by pzman »

I'm looking for any good releases from roughly about 87-92 since i havent heard/come across many. I know sweden/scandinavia had a very good early-mid 80s scene but not sure about the scene afterwards. Hope you guys can help. PS - sorry guys no death/black/extreme metal please

I'm also interested to hear some late 80s and early 90s Trad/Power/Prog metal from scandinavia AND fennoscandia. Can't name many bands. Back then at least here in Finland most bands played thrash or ventured further towards death or black metal and some listened too much helloween and ABBA and decided to go flower metal.

Off the top of my head:

Mercy (SE) - King Doom (perhaps a bit on the doomy side)
Candlemass (SE) - Nightfall, Ancient Dreams, Tales Of Creation (definitely on the doomy side)
The Krixhjälters (SE) - Evilution (perhaps a bit on the thrashy side)
Damage (FI) - The Immortal Death (1987) (hardcore influenced speed metal-y side, but still good)
Hellion Noise (FI) - Devil's Daughter 7'' (1988)
Masterwork (FI) - Bad Power 7'' (1990)
TNT (NO) - Intuition (not my cup of tea at all, but others seem to like it)

The first Tarot album (Spell of Iron) is amazing, classic finnish heavy metal for sure but since the op set the time line to 87-92 it doesn't count. The rest of their discography is pretty boring and mediocre at best IMO. I haven't really got around to listen to Mercy enough. I guess I should start with the self-titled though?

Ah shoot, I thought the first one was 87. I remember the second one having good songs too, but then the band sucked after that. The first one does have better songs from what I remember, "MidWinter Nights" is a kickin' track.

AFFLICTED - Prodigal Sun (Swe 1992) (a bit average though)
DESTINY - Atomic Winter (Swe 1988) great!
METAL MERCY - The Unborn Child 12" (Swe 1989) rare and very good!
PROPHETS OF DOOM - Access to Wisdom (Den 1989) not bad
STRATOVARIUS - Fright Night (Fin 1989) much better than their recent stuff
TAD MOROSE - Leaving the Past Behind (Swe 1993) great!

I forewarn you about this Omnitron album.

It's love or hate and you have to be into other music genres then just Metal to appreciate it.

Well I'm into other music genres except Metal, but I really can't stand this one.

I just like metal and proto-metalish bands, and I think it's great. A bit crazy perhaps, but a great album.
