Satan's Host "Metal From Hell"

Yeah I love a lot of stuff the typical American 00's metal listener would think is cheesy (probably like... 90% of the music I listen to actually). I don't use the word indiscriminately, then. Some people might think Slauter Xstroyes are cheesy ("...and we shall build a city made of heavy metal steel...") but for me it passes some sort of internal test of 'do they mean it?'. I am not sure why, Satan's Host do not.

There's just something extremely Baudelaire Variety Show about hearing Tyrant go 'bang your head for lucifeeer' at that part of the song, not just the lyrics, not just the vocal melody, not just the image of the band, but everything together. I am not saying they weren't serious, I can't really judge their intent as I haven't studied a lot of SH paraphernalia like interviews and the like, but I can say that they don't come off as serious to me.

There's a little of that element in early Jag Panzer too. "WARFARE! Take it from the streets, put it in the sheets!" ... I can see the Tyrant winking at me mischievously.

Or my favorite line is "I am a man who shows no mercy for the weak! NO MERCY! NO MERCY!". It's difficult for me to not think of a cabaret musical with Tyrant all decked out in leather and spikes singing that chorus and then his Grease-like posse popping out from behind some boxes in the post-apocalyptic wasteland matte painting decor and gang-shouting "NO MERCY! NO MERCY!". Then they pretend to hold the Tyrant so he doesn't run off to pretend to beat the other gang up.

Still, I enjoy listening to early Jag Panzer much more than Satan's Host. And when I really want to get into listening to the Tyrant especially I usually play the first Titan Force, an album I otherwise don't generally consider stellar, but because that sort of music I thought suited his delivery the most.

Erlking: I'm glad to hear you're enjoying Mekong Delta. Watchtower is one to revisit yeah because although the music is very technical I don't think it's cold, as I've said before I get this feeling from Watchtower that they got boners playing this stuff instead of bands like say, Cynic. They're still a Heavy Metal band. I think Control and Resistance has aged well and is - once you get used to it - full of hooks, too.

Really overrated as far as i'm concerned.....

Most of the tunes are way below average imo.............

maybe so, but the question i would like to ask to everyone of you , is why this album is overrrated??? dotn get me wrong i like it a lot,and i think that bad production gives them the eerie feeling

i think it would be a good thread too "why certain albums are overrrated" like this case

Whether it is overrated or underrated is just a personal opinion. I personally think it kicks major ass and that a lot of people are underestimating it or can't understand it at all. But that's only my opinion.

I have heard this album a few times and I am not sure I like it. I realise to some ears it is utter genius but I guess I am missing something. Maybe it will click one day

I'm very used to the sound of Metal From Hell. I don't think I can listen to it or enjoy it that much with a better production. Productions mean almost nothing to me; it's the atmosphere and overall feeling that counts and Metal From Hell has these elements 100% embedded in their satanic noise. The songstructures are godly put together and King Of Terror is one of the best metalsongs ever made. The guitar sounds like a Big Bertha in action; total devastation; the sound of metal crushing your being. There's nothing cheesy in Metal From Hell; it's pure hellish metal from start to finish!!!!!

ok, so i got the MFH/MW boot cd, and i'm wondering if there's an error for the MW songs: according to metal-archives, "witches return" is over 6 min, and "face of fire" is 10, and yet...on the cd i have, "witches" appears to be broken up into two tracks, both 7 minutes long, with the same chorus, while "face" is skipped entirely, unless one of the songs is technically FoF..? and the song "demonic plague" appears to have been omitted too, which sucks; but at least the sound and packaging is decent...does anybody else own this and can verify, b/c it's driving me nuts...

as far as MFH, i can see why some would think it's overpraised in certain circles, but to me it's one of the more unique and insane metal recordings created...and MW isn't unlistenable if you're used to demo/rehearsal recordings...

You have the Greek boot and yes there are many errors on the tracks/tracklist. Don't remember them all right now, but for example it seems that "Witches return" was recorded two times and generally the Midnight Wind reh is a total mess on that CD.

cheers for the help; it figures something would get fukked, but at least the MFH tracklist is fine...i guess 'witches' was so good they had to place it twice!

i'm not gonna hold my breath finding the Lp version, haha..

Metal From Hell - surely one of the best US Metals albums for me. Harry Conklin's performance is nothing short of phenomenal! I like bands that have a more darker, evil sound and satan's host is definitely among them. btw i didnt think this album of all would get a kinda mixed reception especially in the corroseum!
