(Southeast) Asian Metal?

Post by The Knell »

I've seen a few things out there that look interesting but you seldom hear recommends or anything about them, except maybe Singapore which has a few excellent extreme metal materials to offer like Abhorer , Impiety, Itnos, AsSahar, etc
Malaysia & Indonesia had a few part pop rock part hard rock / trad. metal records like Power Metal, Handy Black, Khatulistiwa, Lefthanded all from late 80s-early 90s. They're good, but they have too much cheesy ballads&stuff there, which also sound too similar in comparison. I want good raw heavy metal without keys, but this is impossible to find there? I heard from Black Fire in Malaysia, which is supoosed to be a very old Thrash/Black Metal band from ealry 80ies, heard only their debut a few years ago but it was quite shabby (Recorded in 2003 i think). Asked the band abou the old demos but theyre hard to contact, told me theyre selling the crap debut and nothing about the demos I wanted dubs from or rips , would have payed for hearing them but well. The isles there+Thailand also have a growing huge death metal scene which is actually shitty, with lots of crap, mostly US brutal death metal rip off, I want Possessed, Morbid Angel-Death Metal in Asian fashion, no ratatatatata!!!! Blooooorgh-"Metal" , bah.
but there is Eternal Madness which are original and fairly good but not really my taste, also with keys.
Okay then there's China which I know one that is named "Ritual Day", they're not bad, melodic black metal, but I'm searching for old heavy metal or other classic genres..
I recently saw promising looking stuff from South Korea, here a few examples:

Nuclear

Armageddon
http://metal-archives.com/band.php?id=2001

Avalanche
http://metal-archives.com/band.php?id=40284

Goguryeo Band
http://metal-archives.com/band.php?id=73911

Don't look bad at all, do they!? Anyone knows any band from said countries? So far I digged nothing really special there.

RATOR from Malaysia is quite good and extreme. Their Black-Metal is old-school, thrashy, and sounds a bit like old BEHERIT but played faster and very twisted (not that our Finnish heroes didn't play twisted music, though...). Their new album is in the style of the demo, just better played and better recorded, but there no clinical sound here. I like it a lot.

I have to disagree about BLACK FIRE, since I like their music a lot. Their album reminds me of Polish TURBO's The Last Warrior, which I like a lot, with an South-Eastern Asian touch added. On their 1988 live MCD, one can hear unpolished and rawer versions of the songs, where their older influences -like BLACK SABBATH or early SODOM- can be heard.

About the old Malaysian HR/HM scene, JUNCTION is for sure a fave of mine and one of the heaviest bands from this scene. We spoke of this already in the forum before.

From China, TANG DYNASTY is a band to check. It's more progressive HM than anything else, and sometimes it's a bit disturbing for us Westerners because they draw influences into local music too, and not only in Rock'n'Roll or classical Western music, but both albums are of high quality standard. There are several videos around on YouTube for you to watch.
BTW, don't try to get these albums through some distributors that charge a 25€ import and rarity price while these CDs were pressed in hundreds of thousands copies and are sold for cheap locally. I paid less than 12€ for one, and 9€ for the other, and I'm sure that locally they cost 3€ or so.

RITUAL DAY is OK for me, with some good ideas, but I didn't remember a lot of things from their music.

Try the two compilations Ressurection of the Gods if you want to check bands. Some distros may still have those avalaible for a cheap price

There's HYPONIC from Hong-Kong too. They play decent Doom-Death if my memory serves well.

There's CHTONIC from Taiwan that play extreme Metal, but I listened to the LP once and I hated it so it was up for trade immediately.

In THAILAND there are SURRENDER OF DIVINITY that play good Black-Metal. Check Legion of Death's website for this : http://www.legionofdeathrecords.com/. For him it's a passion and not a jump in a new trend like some distros around...

EDIT : ARMAGEDDON from Korea is great IMO. Classical Heavy-Metal with progressive touch and a unique voice. Check DYONISUS too ! There are surely threads about them in the forum, too.

That's one of the reason that makes TANG DYNASTY great IMO. For example I love the peking opera influenced vocals. 8)

Thanks Nuke. I'm a bit fed up with Black Metal and need a few exotic classic metal things now. I know SOD , thought they were from Singapore. Rator I do not know, might check them sometimes later.

Junction looks like the average Hard Rock / Pop band over there, but I'll look after this (guess MasterComp has samples? Do you have that link again?)

Now Tang Dynasty really interests me. Do you know where to purchase one good CD without paying up high?

Also this goes for Armageddon + Dyonisus. Nuclear looks too good also. But this must mean nothing as we all know

From Singapore : SIL KHANNAZ (thrash metal)

They're a very good band indeed. Their music is quite evil-sounding IMO. By the way, SILENT DEATH played good Death-Metal, but I didn't talk of them because they're quite well-known.

I'm curious about MODAR. I guess that if you give heir name it's because they're good.

To get these CDs, well, Metaleros Records would be a first choice but he tends to sell his CDs at a higher price once he considers them sold-out. His choice is fantastic, though.

Try eBay for TANG DYNASTY ! Just beware that they were bootlegs of these albums ! Their label was -is?- in Taiwan, so better check sellers from the latter country. Some japanese Metal distros can have it too.

This shop is great but the guy behind it tends to have the same policy as Metaleros when it comes to OOP CDs. However, Rockstakk choice is insane, even if they often go out of stock very fast on some records. The Japanese prices aren't known to be low, but if the record is easy to find he usually won't overcharge.

And for Malaysian samples, use this address !

In fact their "Pertualang" LP has just a few ballads...I recommend that album as well...

Thanks for contributing.

Personally I think Modar are so-so, some quite good parts, some really bad parts. They have their debut rereleased limited to 300 copies but unfortunately only on CDR. A bit of old Paradise Lost style here

EDIT: I traded twice with Miki@Rock Stakk but for old japanese records. He's an awesome dude. However, I didn't looked for those records here yet.

Korea: Try the first 2 albums from Crash. Pretty good thrash metal. Stick to those 2 though, as they went modern, groovy, and semi-industrial after that.

Malaysia: Try the band F.T.G. (stands for Freedom That's Gone...kinda cheesy, I know). I know their first 2 albums are solid death/thrash. I'll also second the Cromok reco.

The Chinese scene is unfortunately pretty derivative, and the few bands that try to do something original have rather offsetting characteristics, such as 206 & Thinkers that unfortunately leaves an aftertaste of Cradle of Filth.

I'd still like to give a weak recommendation in the form of Spring & Autumn, a progressive band with some Chinese folk influences. The sound is regrettably rather modern.

If you want an unoriginal but still enjoyable band check out black-thrashing Hellward.
