It's just the edge Walkyier gave them is missing, and the complexity of the music tends to give me a headache if I try to listen to the album from beginning to end. The thin production also doesn't help.
It's not totally bad, it's just something I don't feel like putting on my turntable so often. Yeah, there are some great riffs, too bad they are only played once in the middle of 20 others (much more OTT than on Dreamweaver, where the complexity was limited a bit by Walkyier). Vocals are good too but there aren't any catchy parts like what Martin used to do, Desmond only sings chaotically over Sneap's 9min instrumental porn audios.
Even if I don't rate Mourning Has Broken as an album of Sabbat, it's still so bland... Recently I bought Watchtower - Control and Resistance and during the first spin I said to my friend "This sounds like Mourning Has Broken 45rpm" :D

I think it was because Hell didn't like it...

He's not - Martin Walkyier recorded the album first before Bower was even involved, but it didn't work right and the session was scrapped, and David Bower got the vocalist position.

They definitely made the right choice - Walkyier may sing closer to Halliday's rhythm style, but Bower's vocals are delightfully unhinged.
