(part 1)
Well I am here in Mongolia and I am trying to discover the local scene. Actually there isn't much to say....few bands, only 3 metal shop in the whole country (it means in the capital Ulan Bator) and no metal stuff for sale except a couple of bands.
But I met a young guy who's into musical video production and he promised me to introduce some prime movers metalhead including members of AYASHIN SALKI, HURD and HARANGA, the first hard rock/heavy metal bands from Mongolia.
AYASHIN SALKHI were born already in 1984...unfortunately I couldn't get much informations about them. There are some biographies in mongolian language only which list a couple of albums: Hurricane (1987) and Super Stainless Steel (1992). According to other sources it seems there is another "thing" dated 1985 called "We go in different directions". What is that? A demo? An album? A video track? A single recorded track? I have no idea.
Anyway until mid 90's they played traditional heavy metal, if not blues rock in the early beginning and then they slowly moved into thrash up to death metal a la Carcass-Death in their only official album recorded in 2004 "Coffin town under the moon".
This album is widely spreaded and it's really easy to find in the few music stores here. It's very good death-thrash, good production and nice artowrk. The CD is a re-release made in 2007 with a couple of bonus tracks as the original edition made in 2004 (which I suppose was a CDR) is totally impossible to find nowadays.
A few more single tracks, video tracks and promo songs were recorded in the following years....
I am trying to get in touch with them and see if there's the possibility to re-release their first mysterious albums on a proper CD edition....I don't think it will be easy but I'll try.
heavy metal from the land of Gengis Khan
(part 2)
HURD are the second biggest name in mongolian heavy metal history. They formed in 1992 and up to now they recorded several CDR album, most of them being compilation albums. Their discography includes also a couple of DVD(r) and an unplugged album. In any case they all are impossible to find nowadays. The only available album is the CDR recorded in 2005 where they have a more nu metal sound, not bad, not fantastic. Just average stuff.
HARANGA (or XARANGA) are another classic band formed in 1989. They originally played a nice hard rock and, with time, theyu moved to progressive rock and they are still active now.
I don't know if there is some recordings from the early years. For sure their first official album dates to 1997 and in the same year they put out also a Best Of. In any case we're talking, as usual, of impossible to find CDs....it seems that every album released until 5-6 years ago simply disappeared from the market. Not that the mongolian music production is so prolific but maybe for mongolian audience an old album just sounds "too old" and nobody keeps it in stock anymore.
I will try to make some interviews if possible and dig out the first recorded stuff of AYASHIN SALKHI when they were still heavy metal, first stuff from HURD and HARANGA....it won't be easy. But I'll keep you updated.
In the meantime I am building a new blogspot webshop/webnews where I'll put on sale some alternative music I found here, including also NISVANIS, another historical band from UB who play a mix of grunge and punk, active since late 90's....
Maybe in the next months I will move to Nepal and try to find local metal production from there...I already alerted the guys I made friendship with last year in Kathmandu and they're hunting every heavy metal store or music shop to see what is available and which cd may be found in Nepal....
In any case stay tuned for more information about the metal scene from Mongolia
cheers

Re: heavy metal from the land of Gengis Khan
So the Mongolian has not evolved to the forming of a heavy metal band called Genghis Khan yet? Shocking!
I looked up the bands you mentioned.
I found some of AYASHIN SALKHI's song from that deaththrash album on youtube. Sounds good indeed. Really makes me wonder how that old material sounds.

Hurd sounds good too. There are some video's of the older songs too.

Song from first compilation album with great Mongolian war scenes:

I'd like to hear the entire first album. This sounds promising.
Also found a Haranga video:
