pan_Heathen wrote:I'm thinking about the Metallica MFN CDs - some have barcodes, some don't. The English ones nevers have barcodes, the French could be both. Probabily the ones without it must have been pressed earlier, but I wonder - out of curiosity - how old are the versions from France with barcodes.

There (according to musik sammler) is a Master Of Puppets version printed in England and without a barcode, so that could mean that the versions from france were pressed from 1987 to 1989, as in 1989 the Vertigo versions began flooding the market.
I'm not sure about the exact dates and when barcodes started to appear on the French VS. UK pressings (I'll have to look into this more carefully later) but I do know that the dates provided on musik sammler for the majority of these pressings are just taken off of the original copyright date from either the back insert or the disc itself. I know this because in the past I've had arguments with certain entry owners on that site over the actual release date. Either way, the majority of these Music For Nation CD's were released in the late 80's and not 1983, 1984 etc. like listed on the entries.

I once found a scan of an old Music For Nations catalogue on some website that listed a bunch of LP's and CD's and the actual release dates and I remember the first few Metallica albums being in there, but fuck if I can remember where that is now... This would definitely help with your other questions as well.

Maybe someone else will see this and know...

Don't know about the barcodes, but the UK->France transition was in 1988 with 100% certainty. Applies to both vinyl and CD.

Alright, mine says GZ E72616 NCD 001, so I don't have the first press then, but it's without barcode... Bootleg perhaps, or maybe a localized pressing for a different market? (The matrix is typical of the GZ pressing plant in the Czech Republic, they started pressing CDs in 1988)

One barcode, not two... maybe?

I know most/all later BM pressings have two barcodes.

It's just a later pressing, many old Noise discs were later repressed in the Czech Republic and share the same "GZ" prefix matrix.

Regarding the barcode issue, I have been over this before and proved the whole "no barcode = first press" theory wrong. This is a misconception held by may Germans and although often true, isn't always.

Just another case in how musik sammler has created false facts.

What version of "Obsessed By Cruelty" can be found on the Japanese pressing? We are of course talking SODOM and the question is whether it is the original german version, or the partially re-recorded US/international version. Does anybody know?

Was Streetfighter "Shoot You Down" released only on LP or later pressed on CD too? I didn't found any info about it. Here and there many NEW CDs without any info about label and other details. I think it's a new bootlegs for usual prices, but this auction confusing me.
