CANDLELIGHT ILLUSIONS was an Athenian quartet consisting of Kostas Attaras (vocals, guitars – ACID PLANET), Lampis Xristofakis (guitars), Leuteris Halianidis (bass – INFERNAL DREAMQUEST) and Kostas Papakostaniou (drums). Their debut demo tape “Dreaming the End” (1999) offers melodic, rather technical and thrashing Death Metal roughly akin to the Gothenburgian scene, but expressed in a distinctly Greek musical language with lots of spiraling lead guitar melodies, supportive keyboard pads and emblematic gruff vocals in the vein of ROTTING CHRIST.
In addition to “Dreaming the End” and some gigs, the band made an appearance on Metal Invader’s “Warzone” compilation series with their arguably best song “Abandonment” (exclusive to this compilation at the time of release). A full-length album was also recorded in 2001, but remains officially unreleased. It is, however, available for download. The album, entitled “Where Flesh and Spirit Divide” (2001), continues in the same vein as the demo and features reworkings of at least one of the demo songs as well as the previously mentioned compilation track.
